Delhi’s Public Transport Faces Crisis as Bus Numbers Plummet to 5,000 Amid Promises of New Services and Improvements

What’s inside:

This article discusses the current state of public transport in Delhi, including bus and metro services.

In 2025, Delhi’s public transport system has seen some changes, with the government expressing a desire to improve services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 200 new electric buses in June, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has been advocating for stronger public transport.

Despite these efforts, progress has been limited. While some new buses have arrived, many old ones have been retired, leaving the total number of operational buses far below the needed 11,000. Currently, there are less than 5,000 buses in service.

The reduction in buses is impacting the public transport system. For example, the bus fleet, which was once 7,300, has dropped to around 5,000, including 3,500 electric buses. However, the government has launched three new interstate bus routes this year and provided drinking water at bus terminals during hot weather.

This year also saw no new metro corridors opened, but the Delhi Metro has made progress in expanding its network. New lines and tunnels have been approved, which will help ease travel across the city.

Challenges persist as the Delhi government faces criticism over declining bus numbers. While hopes were high for an increase in bus services when the BJP came to power in February, fewer new buses have arrived compared to those taken off the roads, creating difficulties for daily commuters.

Summary:

  • Delhi’s public transport is undergoing changes with new electric buses.

  • There is a significant shortfall in the number of operational buses.

  • Public transport improvements include new interstate bus routes.

  • No new metro lines have opened this year, but expansion is underway.

  • Criticism mounts over the declining number of buses available for commuters.
