Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a major relief for passengers traveling towards Northern India. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has officially approved the construction of the 3rd and 4th railway lines between Delhi and Ambala. This project, valued at ₹5,983 Crore, aims to reduce congestion on one of the busiest rail corridors in the country and ensure smoother train operations.
How will this benefit passengers and daily commuters?
The new tracks will cover a distance of 194 km, passing through key districts like Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, and Ambala. Currently, the heavy traffic of goods and passenger trains on the existing double line causes frequent delays. With the quadrupling of the tracks, the Indian Railways plans to introduce more trains, including new Vande Bharat services.
This development is a big boost for tourists and pilgrims. Connectivity to major destinations like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Srinagar, Jammu, and Shimla will improve significantly. The separation of freight and passenger traffic means your train is less likely to stop at outer signals waiting for clearance. The project also supports the transport of coal to thermal power plants in Ropar and Panipat, ensuring better energy security.
Key details regarding cost and completion timeline
The project is part of a larger infrastructure push and is expected to be completed in approximately 4 years. It will generate huge employment opportunities during the construction phase. The government estimates that this initiative will save ₹952 Crore annually in logistics costs and significantly reduce CO2 emissions by shifting transport from road to rail.
