Indian Railways has implemented a significant change in the operation of long-distance trains by introducing the Half-Route system for its crew. This new arrangement ensures that the same staff does not operate the train for the entire journey. Instead, the crew will be changed at mid-way points to maintain safety and efficiency. The orders for this change were issued by the railway headquarters and became effective from March 27.
Key changes in train operations and crew duties
The new system focuses on reducing the workload of running staff including Loco Pilots, Assistant Loco Pilots, and Guards. Earlier, a single crew used to handle long stretches, leading to exhaustion during night duties. With the implementation of the half-route system, the staff will now handover the train at designated stations. This step is expected to improve the mental alertness of the staff and the overall punctuality of the trains.
- Begampura Express: Moradabad lobby crew will work between Moradabad and Ambala, while Ambala lobby handles the Ambala to Ludhiana section.
- Hemkunt Express: Ludhiana lobby crew covers Ludhiana to Saharanpur, and Haridwar lobby handles the Saharanpur to Yog Nagari Rishikesh stretch.
- Punjab Mail: A mandatory crew change point has been established at Bathinda station for better management.
How this system benefits railway safety and staff
Railway officials from Baroda House stated that the review of long night duties led to this decision. By balancing the working hours, the department aims to create a safer environment for both employees and passengers. Shorter duty cycles mean that the crew remains fresh, which directly impacts the safety parameters of high-speed and long-distance train operations across the network. The system is designed to provide relief to rail workers while ensuring that the trains run without unnecessary delays caused by fatigue.
