Western Railway has completed the successful commissioning of the Kavach 4.0 Automatic Train Protection system on the 224.5 route kilometer Vadodara-Nagda rail section. The Ministry of Railways officially announced this development on April 1, 2026, as part of the broader Mission Raftaar initiative. This indigenous safety system is now active on a significant portion of the Mumbai-New Delhi main route, ensuring higher standards of train operations.
What are the technical highlights of this Kavach installation?
The implementation of Kavach 4.0 on this section involved complex engineering and electronic integration. The project included the programming and installation of over 6000 RFID tags along the tracks to track train movement accurately. To ensure continuous communication between stations and locomotives, 39 radio communication towers were established across various stations and mid-sections. Additionally, approximately 600 km of optical fiber cable was laid to support the high-speed data requirements of the system.
| Technical Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Total Distance Covered | 224.5 Route Kilometers |
| RFID Tags | 6000+ Units |
| Radio Towers | 39 Stations and Mid-sections |
| OFC Cable | 600 Kilometers |
| Locomotive Types | WAP-7, WAG-9, and WAP-5 |
Which areas and locomotives are covered under this update?
The newly commissioned section includes the stretch from Vadodara to Mangal Mahudi and from Panchpipliya to Nagda. Pradeep Kumar, the General Manager of Western Railway, flagged off the first special train equipped with this technology from Vadodara station in the presence of DRM Raju Bhadke. Currently, Kavach is being integrated into modern locomotives like WAP-7 and WAG-9, with more units expected to receive the equipment soon. Out of the 693 route kilometers on the Western Railway portion of the Delhi-Mumbai route, 559.5 kilometers are now protected by this system. The remaining gap between Mangal Mahudi and Panchpipliya is expected to be covered shortly as automatic signaling work progresses.
