The Ministry of Railways has officially celebrated the Chenab Bridge as a crowning achievement of modern Indian infrastructure. Soaring 359 meters above the riverbed, this architectural wonder has transformed travel in the region since becoming operational in June 2025. The bridge serves as a vital link in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, effectively integrating the Kashmir Valley into the national railway network.

A Feat of Engineering Excellence
Constructed by Afcons Infrastructure Limited under the guidance of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited and Northern Railways, the project is a testament to Indian ingenuity. The construction process was a massive undertaking, involving over 1,300 workers and 300 engineers. To ensure structural integrity, the bridge utilizes high-grade materials from partners like Adani Cement, Ambuja Cements, ACC, and AMNS India. With a total project cost of approximately ₹1,486 crore, the bridge is designed to last and features India’s first 780-meter-long blast protection platform.
Connectivity and Future Growth
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted that the bridge is more than just a transit point; it is a symbol of regional progress and modernization. Since the commencement of Vande Bharat services in June 2025 and the subsequent extension of the Srinagar–Jammu Vande Bharat route in April 2026, travel has become significantly more efficient for both locals and tourists. By offering “soothing views” and a seamless connection to the rest of India, the Chenab Bridge is rapidly positioning the Kashmir Valley as a key hub for tourism and economic development, fulfilling a long-standing vision for the nation’s railway connectivity.
