Western Railway is significantly increasing the number of 15-coach local train services on its Mumbai suburban network to manage the heavy passenger rush. This initiative is designed to boost carrying capacity and offer a more comfortable journey for daily commuters. By May 2026, Western Railway aims to operate more than 250 daily services of 15-coach local trains, marking a major milestone in suburban transit management.
How many 15-coach services are being added and what is the impact?
The Western Railway has been steadily converting existing 12-car rakes into 15-car formations to address overcrowding. In March 2026, 16 services were upgraded, and an additional 17 services were added in April, bringing the total to 244 daily runs. According to Divisional Railway Manager Pankaj Singh, each 15-coach train increases carrying capacity by 33% per trip. These expansions have already allowed the network to accommodate approximately 45,000 additional passengers every day.
Key updates on route expansion and infrastructure work
The expansion includes the introduction of 15-coach services on the slow corridor between Andheri and Virar. To support these longer trains, Western Railway is carrying out essential infrastructure upgrades at several stations. The following points highlight the recent developments:
- Platform extension work is in progress at Vile Parle, Santacruz, Khar Road, and Bandra stations.
- The Integral Coach Factory is supplying new 15-coach rakes to support the service increase.
- Eight of the newly augmented services operate during peak morning and evening hours to help office-goers.
- Once platform work is finished, 15-coach slow locals will be able to run up to Bandra station.
