Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the newly redeveloped Jaisalmer Railway Station on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 3:30 PM. This project is a key component of the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on modernizing railway infrastructure across India. During this nationwide event, the Prime Minister will simultaneously dedicate 75 upgraded stations to the nation, including notable stops like Barmer and Gotan in Rajasthan.
Key highlights of the Jaisalmer station redevelopment include:
- An investment of 140 crore rupees for state-of-the-art modernization.
- Architectural design inspired by Jaisalmer’s golden-yellow sandstone and the Sonar Fort.
- Enhanced passenger accessibility with 10 lifts, 10 escalators, and two 6-meter-wide foot overbridges.
- A G+2 main building spanning 8,327 square meters and 10,000 square meters of platform shelters.
- Advanced security featuring 219 CCTV cameras monitored by the RPF.
- Integration of a rail coach restaurant, dormitories, and modern waiting halls.
A Blend of Heritage and Modernity
The transformation of Jaisalmer station is designed to offer a world-class experience while honoring the city’s rich cultural legacy. By incorporating the aesthetic of the city’s famous golden sandstone, the station acts as a gateway to the desert state’s heritage. Beyond its look, the station is built for convenience, featuring an expansive air concourse and disabled-friendly infrastructure, including specialized toilets and ramps to ensure inclusivity for all travelers.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
Officials from North Western Railway, including CPRO Amit Sudarshan and DRM Anurag Tripathi, have emphasized that the redevelopment is a strategic move to boost tourism and regional trade. With a daily handling capacity of approximately 35,000 passengers, the station is set to become a vibrant economic hub. The inclusion of a 480-square-meter commercial area, kiosks, and catering facilities is projected to generate an annual non-fare revenue of approximately 50 lakh rupees. This investment not only improves passenger comfort but also serves as a catalyst for growth in the local economy, solidifying Jaisalmer’s position as a premier tourist destination in India.
