Northern Railway has approved a budget of 201 crore rupees to enhance passenger safety across its premium train services. Under this initiative, 4038 coaches belonging to Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express will be equipped with CCTV cameras. This move aims to provide a safer travel experience and better monitoring of common areas within the trains.
What are the key highlights of the safety upgrade?
The safety project includes specific technical requirements and additional facilities for passengers. Each coach will have four high-definition cameras installed near the doors and common movement areas to maintain privacy while ensuring security. The approved budget also covers the following facilities:
- Installation of CCTV cameras in 4038 coaches of premium trains
- Provision of Wi-Fi facilities in 50 trains for passenger convenience
- Video surveillance systems to be set up at 1589 railway stations
- AI-based data analysis to be explored for better monitoring
How will this impact the national railway safety network?
This regional development is part of a larger plan by the Ministry of Railways to cover all 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives across India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed that the cameras must capture high-quality footage even at speeds of 100 kmph and in low-light conditions. These systems will help the Railway Protection Force track miscreants and organized gangs effectively. The project is expected to significantly reduce incidents and improve the overall reliability of the rail network for common passengers.
