Indian Railways is set to transform safety protocols by installing advanced AI sensor cameras near railway stations in Uttar Pradesh. These high-tech systems will perform a virtual X-ray of every train joint as they enter or exit a station. This transition from manual inspections to automated technology aims to eliminate human errors and ensure a much safer travel experience for passengers across the state.

How will the AI sensor system improve train safety?

The new AI-based technology replaces the traditional manual inspection method where railway staff used torches to check bogies under limited visibility. High-resolution sensors will now scan wheels, axles, and joints in real-time. If any defect or risk is detected, the system will instantly send a notification to the engineering team. A dedicated computer system in the rolling huts will monitor these reports, allowing for immediate intervention before any technical fault turns into a hazard.

Key features of the AI surveillance and monitoring project

The North Central Railway (NCR) has already initiated this project at Prayagraj Junction and Kanpur Central with a budget of approximately one crore rupees. Beyond mechanical safety, the project includes several other high-tech upgrades for passenger convenience and security.

  • AI in General Coaches: CCTV cameras with AI capabilities are being installed in general coaches to monitor criminal activities and boost security.
  • Electronic Interlocking: 15 stations will receive AI-based interlocking systems to assist station masters in linking tracks accurately.
  • Access Control: AI cameras will manage crowd flow at 76 major stations, ensuring only passengers with confirmed tickets enter platforms.
  • Cleaning Monitoring: A new policy will use AI tools to track on-board housekeeping services through geo-tagged and time-stamped photos.

Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that safety is the top priority and these AI systems will act as the eyes and brains of the railway network. This shift towards automation is expected to significantly reduce the possibility of accidents caused by technical oversights during manual checks.
