The Namo Bharat train service is set to expand beyond Meerut with a new superfast corridor plan linking Delhi directly to Haridwar and Rishikesh. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently met with central ministers to propose this extension, which aims to reduce travel time between Delhi and Rishikesh to less than three hours. This move follows the existing Delhi-Meerut corridor and aligns with the state’s vision for improved pilgrimage and tourism connectivity.
Proposed route and expected travel time
The new corridor is planned to run parallel to NH-58 and will connect Modipuram in Meerut to several key locations in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The stations included in the proposal are Daulala, Khatauli, Purkazi, Roorkee, Jwalapur, Haridwar, and finally Rishikesh. Once operational, the journey from Delhi to Rishikesh is expected to take around 2.5 to 3 hours, significantly cutting down the current road travel time. This high-speed connectivity is expected to facilitate easier access for pilgrims and tourists visiting the holy cities.
Key benefits and project development details
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Proposed Corridor | Meerut to Rishikesh via Haridwar |
| Key Stations | Modipuram, Roorkee, Jwalapur, Haridwar |
| Travel Time | Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Delhi |
| Primary Proponent | Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami |
| Impact Areas | Tourism, Industrial growth, Student Hubs |
| Current Status | Plan prepared and proposal discussed |
The extension is anticipated to boost tourism by up to 200 percent and support industrial growth along the route. Regions like Roorkee, known as an education hub, will benefit from faster commutes for students and professionals. However, the project faces certain challenges such as obtaining environmental clearances near the Rajaji National Park and managing land acquisition costs along the highway. This proposal was formally discussed by Chief Minister Dhami during meetings with central authorities in April 2026 to ensure better connectivity before the 2027 Kumbh Mela.
