The Ministry of Railways is moving forward with its plan to modernize railway stations across India. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 157 stations located in Aspirational Districts have been chosen for a complete transformation. This initiative is part of a larger project involving 1,338 stations to improve the travel experience for passengers nationwide as part of the futuristic stations vision.
What facilities will be added to these railway stations?
The redevelopment focuses on providing modern amenities that go beyond the basic requirements. Passengers can expect better entry and exit points, upgraded waiting halls, and cleaner toilets. Many of these stations will feature new lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi for everyone. To support the local economy, One Station One Product kiosks will be set up to sell local goods to travelers. Some stations will even have executive lounges and business meeting areas.
How many stations are being developed under this scheme?
Indian Railways has identified a total of 1,338 stations for development under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. As of March 2026, work has already been completed at around 180 stations. The project also includes building Roof Plazas and city centers at major stations to make them more than just transit points. Environmentally friendly features like ballastless tracks and eco-friendly designs are also part of the long-term plan to build stations for a new India.
