Indian Railways has initiated a comprehensive plan to upgrade the travel experience for passengers in express trains. Following a review meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on April 10, 2026, the ministry decided to implement advanced technologies to eliminate jerks and improve safety. These measures focus on modernizing track infrastructure and coach coupling systems across the network.
Key technologies for smoother train journeys
- Composite Sleepers: Old concrete and iron sleepers on bridges and crossings will be replaced with lightweight composite sleepers for better cushioning.
- AI Monitoring: Ground Penetration Radar and AI systems will now monitor track foundations to detect hidden defects early.
- Advanced Couplers: Semi-automatic couplers are being installed to stop sudden shocks during train movement.
- Joint Testing: Magnetic Particle Testing will ensure that all track welds are strong and free from minor cracks.
Key features of the jerk-free initiative
The primary goal of this modernization is to bring the comfort level of regular express trains at par with Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains. The new composite sleepers are capable of bearing up to 700 kg per square centimeter, making them ideal for heavy traffic routes. Passengers can expect a significant reduction in vibrations especially when the train crosses bridges or complex track points. This project also includes the use of special inspection vehicles that continuously assess the health of the railway infrastructure.
