West Central Railway (WCR) has announced that medical treatment across all its hospitals will become completely digital starting from May 1, 2026. This major initiative by the Jabalpur headquarters is designed to benefit around two lakh railway employees and their dependents. The new system will officially end the requirement for physical paper referrals, making the entire healthcare process more efficient and transparent for the beneficiaries.

How will the digital registration and referral system work?
The entire treatment process will now be centered around the Unique Medical Identification (UMID) card. When a patient visits a railway hospital or an empanelled private facility, the registration will be done using the UMID number. A verification code (OTP) will be sent to the registered mobile number to confirm the identity of the patient. This digital shift ensures that patients no longer need to carry physical documents or wait for manual referral slips to be issued by railway doctors. Officials have instructed all employees to keep their UMID data and mobile numbers updated to ensure a smooth transition to this paperless environment.
What are the main benefits for railway employees?
The digitization of medical services brings several practical advantages to the railway staff and their family members. By moving to an electronic module, the railway administration aims to reduce paperwork and speed up the approval process for specialized treatments. The key features of this system include:
- Cashless Treatment: Billing will be managed through the e-referral portal, so patients do not need to make advance payments at private hospitals.
- 24/7 Emergency Approval: In case of an emergency, private hospitals can admit patients using UMID and OTP, with railway doctors providing online approval within 24 hours.
- Health Data Access: Employees can track their medical records and request teleconsultation through the Railway HMIS mobile app.
- Transparency: Digital records make it easier to monitor treatment quality and reduce the possibility of administrative delays.
