Merta Road Junction in Rajasthan is witnessing a significant transformation as the state first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) shed is being developed. This project, being executed with an investment of approximately 60 crore, marks a major step toward railway modernization under the Jodhpur Division of North Western Railway. The development focuses on enhancing the efficiency of electric train operations and providing safer travel options for passengers.
Key features and technical facilities at the new shed
- The project involves converting the existing diesel car shed at Merta Road into a high-tech MEMU maintenance facility.
- Once fully operational, the shed will have the capacity to handle the maintenance and homing of nearly 50 MEMU rakes.
- Infrastructure upgrades include the electrification of pit lines, advanced traction distribution systems, and the installation of wheel lathe machines.
- The facility will feature modern electrical maintenance systems to ensure the safety and reliability of electric trains.
- The project was initiated during the 2022-23 period and has seen steady progress according to recent official reports.
Impact on passenger travel and railway operations
The establishment of this shed is expected to significantly improve the punctuality of trains across the Jodhpur Division. Since most routes like Jaisalmer, Barmer, Luni, and Samdari are already electrified, the local maintenance of MEMU trains was a long-standing requirement. DRM Anurag Tripathi mentioned that the shift from diesel maintenance to electric facilities will reduce the operational costs and fuel consumption of the railways. For common passengers, this means more frequent MEMU train services that are faster, cleaner, and more comfortable. The local maintenance facility ensures that train rakes do not have to be sent to distant divisions for routine checks, which helps in maintaining a regular and timely schedule for daily commuters.
