Indian Railways has introduced significant changes to the reservation chart preparation process to assist passengers with their travel planning. These new guidelines aim to provide early confirmation status to passengers holding Waitlist (WL) and Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets. By shifting the timing of the first chart preparation, the ministry wants to reduce travel uncertainty and allow passengers enough time to make alternative arrangements if their tickets remain unconfirmed.
What are the new timings for first reservation chart preparation?
The Ministry of Railways has revised the schedule for generating the first reservation chart to assist passengers in getting timely updates. Under the new rules, the timing depends on when the train is scheduled to depart from its originating station. This systematic approach helps passengers avoid last-minute stress regarding their seat status. The following table explains the new chart preparation schedule:
| Train Departure Time Window | First Chart Preparation Timing |
|---|---|
| Between 05:01 and 14:00 | By 20:00 (8 PM) of the previous evening |
| Between 14:01 and 05:00 (Next Day) | At least 10 hours before departure |
Key benefits and additional facilities for passengers
- Confirmation Clarity: RAC and Waitlisted passengers will now get their status updates 9 to 18 hours in advance in several cases.
- Boarding Point Change: Passengers are now allowed to change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train departure.
- Travel Upgrades: If seats remain vacant, travelers can upgrade their travel class even half an hour before the journey starts.
- RailOne App: The old UTS app has been replaced by the RailOne app since March 2026 to provide all railway services in one place.
- Enhanced Security: To prevent black marketing and fake bookings, the railway has introduced Aadhaar-based OTP and anti-bot technology.
The second and final reservation chart will continue to be prepared about 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train. This final chart accounts for any last-minute cancellations or current bookings. Passengers should note that if an e-ticket remains on the waitlist after the final chart is prepared, it is automatically cancelled and the refund is processed to the original payment mode.
