Samastipur-Darbhanga route: Dozens of trains affected due to doubling work, check diverted routes

Rail services on the Samastipur-Darbhanga section of the East Central Railway (ECR) will be heavily impacted from May 9 to May 14, 2026. This is due to the final phase of the doubling project, including Pre-Non Interlocking (Pre-NI) and Non-Interlocking (NI) work. The Railway Safety Commissioner (CRS) is also conducting inspections at Rambhadrapur, Hayaghat, and Thalwara stations.

The doubling work has led to significant changes in train operations. While some reports mention different figures, the official updates indicate a large number of affected services. To manage the crowd, a special passenger train will run between Darbhanga and Samastipur on May 12 and 13.

Long-distance trains like Gondia-Raxaul Express, Jaynagar-Ara Express, and Howrah-Jaynagar Express are being diverted. These trains will now move via the Samastipur-Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi and Darbhanga-Sitamarhi-Raxaul-Sugauli sections. Other affected routes include Samastipur-Manihari, Darbhanga-Samastipur, and Darbhanga-Varanasi City.

Why is this work being done and how long was the delay?

The project was approved in March 2015 with an estimated cost of 519 crore rupees and was supposed to finish by 2019. However, it faced a delay of about 11 years. DRM Jyoti Prakash Mishra stated that CRS inspection and speed tests are mandatory before opening the tracks. PRO R K Singh mentioned that this upgrade will increase line capacity and improve safety for passengers.
