Indian Railways is set to transform the rail landscape in Bihar’s strategically vital Seemanchal region. The national transporter has initiated 11 major railway projects spanning a total of 764 kilometers to bolster passenger travel, streamline freight movement, and catalyze economic growth across the districts of Purnia, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed these developments on August 5, 2026, in a formal response to the Lok Sabha following inquiries from MP Rajesh Ranjan (Pappu Yadav). Given the region’s geographical significance near international borders, this infrastructure push is designed to strengthen logistical links not only within Bihar but also toward West Bengal and the North-Eastern states.
Progress Across Key Rail Infrastructure Projects
The massive 764 km expansion plan is currently moving through various stages of execution. Active construction is already underway on critical segments, including the Katihar–Kumedpur Doubling (30 km) and the Katihar–Mukuria Doubling (35 km).
To further increase capacity, the government has sanctioned significant capacity-enhancement works such as the Aluabari Road–New Jalpaiguri 3rd and 4th Line (57 km) and the Thakurganj–Siliguri Doubling (57 km). For long-term network efficiency, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been finalized for the Goldenganj–Katihar 3rd and 4th Line (300 km). Additionally, surveyors are currently assessing the feasibility of the Araria–Thakurganj Doubling (111 km) and the Forbesganj–Lakshmipur New Line (18 km).
Modernizing Passenger Infrastructure
Beyond track expansion, the region is seeing a massive upgrade in passenger-facing infrastructure. Katihar Junction, which serves as a major gateway for the region, has been selected for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This initiative will focus on upgrading station amenities, improving passenger comfort, and enhancing overall operational efficiency at the station. These combined efforts reflect the Ministry’s commitment to modernizing the railway network in Eastern India to meet the growing demands of both commuters and the logistics sector.
