Indian Railways is expanding its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, known as Kavach, to make train travel safer. The system is now operational on over 3,500 route kilometers. Recent updates include the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on key sections to prevent collisions and reduce human errors.

What is the latest update on Kavach Version 4.0

Indian Railways commissioned Kavach Version 4.0 on the Tundla – Panki Dham section on July 4, 2026. This upgraded system allows trains to run at speeds up to 160 kmph over a 175 route kilometer section. The project included the installation of 4,600 RFID tags, 17 communication towers, and equipment at 39 stations. It was developed by Kernex Microsystems and validated by RDSO and ISA Italcertifier.

Where is Kavach being installed across India

The government is focusing on high-density corridors and the Golden Quadrilateral. Several new projects were approved in June 2026 to expand the network:

Zone/Division Route Kilometres Project Cost
East Coast Railway (ECoR) 631 RKm ₹270 crore
Ambala Division (Northern Railway) 811 RKm ₹201 crore
Ahmedabad Division (Western Railway) 598 RKm ₹140 crore

What are the future targets for rail safety

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the goal is to cover the entire rail network within the next six years. The ministry plans to add 9,000 route kilometers in the next two years. After that, the installation capacity will increase to 10,000 route kilometers per year. The system will use LTE-based communication to monitor train movements and automatically apply brakes in critical situations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
