Indian Railways has officially launched a new online booking facility for excess baggage, effective July 31, 2026. Designed to simplify travel and reduce station queues, this digital service allows passengers to book and pay for additional luggage directly through the official Parcel Management System (PMS) website. By integrating this process with the ticket reservation system, the initiative aims to eliminate the need for manual paperwork and multiple visits to parcel offices.
Key highlights of the new online excess baggage facility include:
• Digital Convenience: Book and pay for excess luggage online via the PMS portal.
• Eligibility: Available for passengers with confirmed tickets in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, First Class, Sleeper, and Second Class.
• Billing Structure: Excess luggage is charged at 1.5 times the standard rate with a minimum charge of ₹30.
• Calculation Method: Charges are calculated in 10 kg slabs with a minimum distance threshold of 50 km.
• Penalty Warning: Carrying unbooked excess luggage can lead to penalties up to six times the normal rate.
Understanding Eligibility and Limits
While this service brings significant relief, it is important to note that not all travel classes are included. Passengers in AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car, and AC 3 Economy are currently ineligible for this online facility, as their maximum baggage limits are strictly restricted to the free allowance. For eligible classes, the free luggage allowance remains generous, ranging from 35 kg for Second Class up to 70 kg for AC First Class. Depending on the class, the total maximum limit, including paid excess, can reach as high as 150 kg for AC First Class.
How to Use the Online Booking Service
To utilize this feature, passengers must have a confirmed train ticket. The process involves visiting the Indian Railways Parcel Management System (PMS) website, where you will need to input your specific journey and parcel details. Once you generate the estimated freight charges, you are required to present your luggage at the origin station’s parcel office. Staff will perform a final weighing and confirmation to complete the process. This system is a major step forward in digitizing railway logistics and improving the overall passenger experience by minimizing last-minute hassles at the station.
