The iconic Jaisalmer Railway Station in Rajasthan has undergone a spectacular transformation, blending the city’s signature golden yellow sandstone architecture with state-of-the-art modern amenities. Completed with an investment of ₹140 crore, the revamped station is designed to handle a daily footfall of approximately 35,000 passengers, positioning it as a premier gateway for tourism and a vital node for military logistics in the desert region.
Key highlights of the station redevelopment include:
- Grand heritage-style aesthetic using traditional Rajasthani sandstone.
- World-class passenger amenities including lifts, escalators, and spacious waiting halls.
- Barrier-free infrastructure with dedicated ramps and accessible toilets for persons with disabilities.
- Advanced digital passenger information systems and improved signage.
- Enhanced operational capacity with a new trip shed and coaching maintenance facilities.
A Fusion of Heritage and Modernity
The station’s design is a visual treat, echoing the historic charm of Jaisalmer while offering an experience often compared to an airport. Beyond the aesthetic upgrades, significant focus has been placed on passenger convenience, including a well-planned concourse, better parking facilities, and improved circulating areas. The project ensures that while the station honors the region’s cultural legacy, it remains fully equipped to handle the demands of modern-day rail travel.
Strategic Infrastructure and Connectivity
The development extends beyond the station building. By April 2, 2026, North Western Railway successfully commissioned a ₹128.25 crore maintenance hub, which includes a trip shed, advanced wheel lathe line, and upgraded coaching maintenance facilities to ensure better operational efficiency.
Connectivity has also received a major boost with the introduction of the Swarn Nagari Express, which began services on November 29, 2025, connecting Jaisalmer directly to Delhi (Shakur Basti). This service was inaugurated by Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. With the project finalized between late 2025 and early 2026, the station now awaits a formal inauguration, which is expected to be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Looking ahead, authorities have already announced plans for a second entry gate and the further expansion of the coaching depot to support the growing rail traffic in the region.
