Following the successful inauguration of the 5.9-kilometer elevated railway track and the new Thanesar Railway Station in July 2026, authorities in Kurukshetra, Haryana, are set to embark on an ambitious urban renewal project. The initiative focuses on the redevelopment of 75 acres of land that became available following the removal of a century-old ground-level railway line. This major infrastructure shift aims to reshape the city landscape while improving connectivity and public amenities.

Key highlights of the project include:

  • 75 acres of land reclaimed for public use following the removal of a 110-year-old railway line.
  • The 5.9-kilometer elevated viaduct project was completed at a cost of approximately ₹447 crore.
  • The development features the construction of modern parks, walking tracks, open-air gyms, and dedicated parking spaces.
  • The elevation project successfully eliminated five major manned level crossings to reduce city traffic congestion.

A Modern Transformation for Kurukshetra

The project, executed by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC), represents a milestone in urban planning. By replacing traditional ground-level tracks with a modern viaduct system supported by 213 pillars, the city has effectively removed the physical barriers that previously divided local neighborhoods. Local officials, including MP Naveen Jindal, have confirmed that the reclaimed space will be utilized to foster local tourism and trade while providing residents with world-class public infrastructure.

Boosting Connectivity and Safety

Beyond the aesthetic and recreational benefits, the elevation of the railway line serves as a crucial solution to long-standing traffic issues. The removal of five major manned level crossings is expected to significantly streamline vehicular movement across Kurukshetra. By eliminating the frequent closure of gates, the city will experience smoother transit, reduced commute times, and enhanced safety for both motorists and pedestrians. As the old tracks are cleared, the city anticipates a comprehensive rejuvenation that will turn a former industrial corridor into a vibrant hub for the community, setting a new benchmark for railway-integrated urban development in Haryana.
