Historic Kurukshetra railway tracks are being removed following elevated line project

The landscape of Kurukshetra is undergoing a major transformation as authorities have officially started the removal of 110-year-old railway tracks. This historic stretch, which runs from the old bus stand to Mirzapur, is being dismantled following the successful operationalization of the city’s new 5.9-kilometer elevated railway line. The project, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2026, was built at a cost of ₹447 crore to enhance urban mobility and safety.

  • 110-year-old tracks being removed between old bus stand and Mirzapur.
  • The project aims to reclaim approximately 75 acres of prime urban land.
  • The 5.9-kilometer elevated corridor has successfully eliminated traffic congestion at five manned level crossings.
  • Vacated land will be repurposed for public parks, open gyms, and parking facilities.

Clearing the way for urban development

The removal process is a significant step in the city’s infrastructure evolution. To facilitate the initial phase of the dismantling, authorities implemented a four-hour road closure near Jhansa Road. This manual removal of tracks is not just about clearing old infrastructure; it is a strategic move to reclaim 75 acres of land that was previously occupied by the railway corridor. Local administration officials have confirmed that they will now focus on lowering road levels at critical junctions, specifically Ambedkar Chowk and Shastri Market, to allow for the smooth passage of heavy vehicles that were previously hindered by the rail line.

Future of the reclaimed corridor

The Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDCO) executed this project with the primary goal of ending the chronic traffic snarls that plagued the city due to five busy level crossings. With the trains now running on the elevated tracks, the ground-level space is no longer required for rail operations. The municipal council has outlined an ambitious plan to transform this reclaimed space into a hub for public amenities. Residents can look forward to new parks, open-air gyms, and dedicated parking facilities, which are expected to significantly improve the aesthetic and functional value of the area. This urban redevelopment strategy marks a new chapter for Kurukshetra, effectively bridging the gap between historical rail heritage and modern civic needs.
