In a significant move to boost regional connectivity in Karnataka, the South Western Railway (SWR) has officially introduced a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service connecting Yelahanka and Arsikere. This new route is designed to provide a faster, more reliable, and cost-effective travel alternative for thousands of passengers, including daily commuters, students, and traders traveling between the bustling hubs of Bengaluru and the districts of Tumakuru and Hassan.
- Inauguration: Flagged off by Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, on July 13, 2026.
- Regular Operations: Commenced on July 14, 2026.
- Schedule: Operates six days a week, excluding Sundays.
- Composition: The train runs with eight modern MEMU coaches.
Train Timings and Operational Details
The new MEMU service is strategically timed to cater to the needs of the working population and students. Train No. 66505 (Yelahanka–Arsikere MEMU) is scheduled to depart from Yelahanka at 6:45 AM and will arrive at Arsikere station by 11:00 AM. For the return journey, Train No. 66506 (Arsikere–Yelahanka MEMU) departs from Arsikere at 2:10 PM, reaching Yelahanka at 7:15 PM.
This service serves several critical stations along the route, including Kodigehalli, Yeshwantpur, Chikkabanavar, Tumakuru, and Tiptur. By connecting these key points, the railway aims to decongest road traffic and provide a comfortable transit option for those traveling through the Tumakuru and Hassan corridors.
Impact on Local Commuters
The introduction of this MEMU service is expected to be a game-changer for daily passengers who rely on public transport. By offering a consistent and affordable mode of travel, the South Western Railway is addressing the growing demand for better connectivity between suburban Bengaluru and the surrounding districts. Officials believe that this initiative will not only assist office-goers and students but also provide a convenient link for pilgrims and traders, thereby stimulating local economic mobility and making daily commutes significantly less burdensome.
