Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala has achieved a significant manufacturing milestone by completing the first rake of 19 Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) broad-gauge passenger coaches for Bangladesh Railway. This delivery marks the beginning of a major international contract and highlights India’s growing role in global railway infrastructure development.
Key details of the consignment include:
- Official roll-out date: August 12, 2026.
- Rake composition: 3 AC sleeper cars, 3 AC chair cars, 11 non-AC chair cars, and 2 power cars.
- Contract scope: Part of a 200-coach order valued at $111 million awarded to RITES Limited.
- Safety standards: Built with a crashworthy design adhering to European standard EN 15227.
Customized Features for Passenger Comfort
These coaches have been meticulously engineered to meet the specific operational needs of Bangladesh Railway. RCF has introduced several first-of-its-kind features in this LHB model to enhance the passenger experience. Travelers can expect reclining chairs with stainless steel armrests and footrests, an integrated CCTV surveillance system, and partially opening windows. Recognizing the diverse needs of passengers, the designers have also included a dedicated baby care room and a prayer room within the train set.
Enhanced Safety and Structural Integrity
Safety remains a top priority in this export consignment. The car body shell has been redesigned for superior impact resistance to ensure passenger protection during collisions. Furthermore, engineers have strengthened the roof structure, specifically designed to withstand the additional load of passengers during peak travel periods, a common operational reality in the region.
A Growing Partnership
This project is being executed under the oversight of RITES Limited, the export arm of Indian Railways. Following the initial delivery, there is an aggressive production schedule in place. RITES CMD Rahul Mithal has confirmed plans to deliver at least three to four additional rakes within the current fiscal year. This collaboration builds upon a successful historical relationship, as RCF previously supplied 120 LHB coaches to Bangladesh between 2015 and 2016. As India continues to export high-quality, safe, and comfortable rolling stock, this 200-coach order further solidifies the strong bilateral ties between the two nations in the railway sector.
