Indian Railways has issued a strict directive clarifying that digital unreserved tickets must be presented directly through the official UTS or RailOne application on the passenger’s registered mobile device. This policy change, which gained significant attention between July 8 and July 12, 2026, aims to streamline ticket verification and curb the misuse of digital travel documents. Passengers are advised to adhere to these updated protocols to avoid unnecessary penalties during their journey.
Key updates regarding unreserved digital ticketing include:
- Only tickets displayed within the official mobile app are considered valid.
- Screenshots, WhatsApp forwards, PDF copies, and photographs are strictly prohibited.
- Tickets must be purchased before the train departs from the boarding station.
- Passengers must carry a valid photo ID alongside their registered mobile phone.
- The fine for traveling without a valid ticket has been increased to ₹500.
Strict Enforcement and Penalty Details
Following reports of passengers being penalized for using invalid formats, such as a recent incident on the Korba-Visakhapatnam Link Express, railway zones like the South East Central Railway (SECR) are actively enforcing these rules. It is important to note that tickets booked after the train has departed are deemed invalid and will be treated as unauthorized travel.
Furthermore, the financial consequences for non-compliance have become more severe. Effective June 19, 2026, the penalty for traveling without a proper ticket was doubled from ₹250 to ₹500. Officials emphasize that these measures are designed to enhance security and ensure the authenticity of the ticketing process.
Scope of the New Directive
It is essential for regular commuters to understand that these guidelines apply specifically to digital unreserved tickets. Passengers holding reserved e-tickets booked through the standard IRCTC portal are not affected by these specific changes. By mandating the use of the live application interface, Indian Railways aims to eliminate the circulation of fraudulent or reused digital images. Travelers using unreserved mobile ticketing are encouraged to ensure their phones are charged and have active connectivity to display their tickets upon demand by the Ticket Checking staff.
