The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has set rules to help users keep their SIM cards active without expensive monthly plans. This rule applies to all major operators including Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL. It is especially useful for people who use a second SIM card only for receiving calls or OTPs.
How does the 20 rupee rule work?
A SIM card is considered inactive if there is no outgoing or incoming call, SMS, or data usage for 90 days. If the user has a prepaid balance of 20 rupees or more, the company will automatically deduct 20 rupees to extend the validity for another 30 days. This process continues as long as the balance is available, allowing the SIM to stay active for up to 120 days.
What happens if the SIM gets deactivated?
If a SIM is deactivated due to low balance, users get a 15-day grace period to reactivate it. During this time, the user can recharge with 20 rupees or visit a customer service store to get the number back. If not reactivated within 15 days, the number may be permanently closed and given to a new user.
