Railway Capacity Boost: Cabinet approves multi-tracking projects worth thousands of crores

The Union Cabinet has approved several major projects to improve the Indian Railways network. Along with the Cotton Kanti Mission and semiconductor units, the government focused on expanding railway capacity to reduce congestion and improve freight movement. These decisions aim to support industrial growth and make travel easier for passengers.

Which major railway lines will get new tracks?

The government approved several multi-tracking projects to clear bottlenecks on busy routes. These include the Nagda-Mathura section, Guntakal-Wadi section, and Burhwal-Sitapur section. These projects will help in moving goods faster and reducing the waiting time for trains.

What are the benefits of these new projects?

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these projects will make railway operations smoother. The expansion will lead to the creation of 19 new stations and improve connectivity for aspirational districts like Gadchiroli and Rajnandgaon. Additionally, the move will reduce carbon emissions and create approximately 3.79 crore man-days of employment.

What other railway updates were announced?

On May 2, 2026, the government approved 895.30 crore rupees for projects including the strengthening of the Kolkata Metro North-South corridor and a bridge project in the Adra Division. The larger multi-tracking projects for Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, approved on April 18, 2026, are expected to be completed by 2030-31.
