What is the DHMU train and its special features?
The DHMU is a self-propelled train set specifically designed for the narrow-gauge tracks of the Kalka-Shimla route. Unlike traditional trains, it has engines at both ends, which means a separate locomotive is not needed to pull the coaches. This design will improve operational efficiency and provide better facilities for tourists and daily passengers.
What were the technical challenges and current status?
The project faced delays due to engine overheating issues that started in March 2023. To fix this, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Chennai deployed engineering teams to modify the cooling system. Recent updates confirm the following progress:
- Successful trial runs were completed on May 25, 2026.
- The Ambala Division confirmed that technical glitches have been resolved.
- ICF Chennai will now submit a detailed report to the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).
The train will start passenger services only after the CRS conducts a final independent safety inspection and gives the official approval.
