Indian Railways is preparing for a major infrastructure upgrade to enhance the travel experience for passengers across the country. During a high-level review meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the ministry approved the use of composite sleepers and artificial intelligence for track maintenance. These modern steps are designed to make journeys quieter and safer by using advanced engineering solutions on the existing network.
Why is the railway switching to composite sleepers?
The traditional concrete and iron sleepers are being replaced by lightweight composite sleepers in critical areas like bridges and crossings. These new sleepers offer several advantages for the common passenger:
- Better Cushioning: They absorb vibrations more effectively, making the ride smoother.
- High Load Capacity: Despite being light, they can bear loads up to 700 kg per square centimeter.
- Longer Life: They are resistant to environmental wear and require less frequent replacement.
- Easy Maintenance: These sleepers are easier to install and can be customized for specific track locations.
How will AI and radar technology ensure passenger safety?
To prevent accidents and track failures, the railway is deploying AI-based monitoring systems like Ground Penetration Radar. This technology allows officials to see beneath the surface of the track base to find hidden structural issues. Along with this, Magnetic Particle Testing will be used to inspect welded joints for very small cracks. This move towards predictive maintenance ensures that repairs are done exactly when needed, reducing the risk of track-related disruptions.
