Indian Railways completed the first trial run of India’s first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana on May 2, 2026. The train ran safely at speeds between 70 and 80 km/h during the initial testing phase. This project is part of the goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

What are the technical details of the Hydrogen train

The train is fully indigenous and developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. It is currently the world’s longest and most powerful hydrogen trainset on a Broad Gauge platform. The train uses a fuel cell-based electric power system and produces only water vapor instead of CO2.

Feature Details
Route Jind to Sonipat (90 km)
Current Trial Speed 70-80 km/h
Designed Top Speed 150 km/h
Configuration 10 Coaches (including 2 Power Cars)
Total Power 2400 kW
Passenger Capacity Over 2,600 passengers
Hydrogen Storage 3,000 kg

How will this impact future railway travel

The hydrogen train will likely replace diesel trains in the future to reduce pollution. Under the Hydrogen for Heritage initiative, the government plans to deploy 35 such trains on heritage and hill routes. The project involved safety inspections by RDSO and PESO, with hydrogen supplied by a large production plant in Jind built with Spanish collaboration.
