Indian Railways is repurposing old AC coaches to create mobile medical units. These coaches will act as mini-hospitals to provide healthcare services at small stations. The initiative focuses on bringing doctors and treatment facilities closer to people in remote areas.
What is the Rudra project by Central Railways
The Bhusawal division of Central Railways launched a project called Rudra. They converted an abandoned AC 3-tier coach into a full medical facility. This project was managed by DRM Ity Pandey and completed using the divisional hospital budget without extra central funds.
What facilities are available in these mobile hospitals
The converted coaches are equipped with several medical tools to help patients. The facilities include:
- Consulting rooms for physicians and specialists
- ECG and blood collection units
- Gynaecological examination area and dental chair
- Telemedicine links to connect with distant specialists
- Refrigeration for vaccines and sterilization units
How will this help railway employees and passengers
These mobile units aim to remove barriers to healthcare in far-flung areas. By late March 2025, the Rudra unit already provided about 1,266 consultations. The railways plan to add more coaches to include ophthalmology and small operating theatres for cataract surgeries.
