Indian Railways has issued strict instructions regarding the transportation of pets and birds in trains. Passengers traveling with animals without proper booking or necessary documents will face strict action. The railway administration will now impose penalties up to six times the normal charges for such violations.
How can you travel with pets in trains?
Passengers can carry pet dogs only in First AC or First Class coaches. This is allowed only if the entire coupe or cabin is reserved. Additionally, the consent of fellow passengers and permission from the TTE are mandatory. For other pets like cats, they can be sent via the parcel office or brake van, where they are kept in a dedicated dog box near the guard.
What are the booking requirements and charges?
To book a pet, passengers must provide a health certificate from a veterinarian, a vaccination certificate, and the owner’s ID proof. The booking fee depends on the weight of the animal and the travel distance. A 2 percent development charge and 5 percent GST will be added to the final amount.
| Animal Type | Permitted Location | Booking Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Dogs (with owner) | First AC / First Class | Full Coupe/Cabin + TTE Permission |
| Cats/Small Pets | Parcel/Brake Van | Health & Vaccination Certificate |
| Sheep/Goat/Pig | Luggage Van Only | Proper Booking & Documentation |
Can pets be booked online?
IRCTC has introduced an online booking facility for pets to make the process easier for passengers. Booking can be done after the first chart is prepared and until the final chart is made. It is important to note that freight charges will not be refunded if the booking is cancelled or if the train is delayed.
