Indian Railways has changed the rules for booking train tickets. The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) which was earlier 120 days is now reduced to 60 days. This new system became effective from November 1, 2024, to make ticket booking more efficient for common passengers.
Why did Indian Railways change the booking window?
The Ministry of Railways took this decision to stop unnecessary ticket blocking. Data showed that about 21% of tickets booked between 61 to 120 days were eventually cancelled. Also, 5% of passengers did not travel and did not cancel their tickets. This change will help genuine passengers get confirmed seats and help the railway board plan special trains better during rush hours.
What are the exceptions to the 60-day rule?
This new rule does not apply to everyone. Foreign tourists can still book their tickets 365 days in advance. Some daytime express trains like Taj Express and Gomti Express already had shorter windows, and those remain the same. Tatkal bookings will continue to work under their own separate rules, usually one day before the journey.
