The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has issued a fresh reminder regarding the official, fixed prices for essential beverages and packaged water on trains and at railway stations. This initiative aims to uphold transparency in catering services and ensure that passengers are not exploited by vendors who charge beyond the mandated limits. By staying informed about these fixed rates, travellers can play an active role in curbing unfair trade practices across the Indian Railways network.
- Standard 150 ml tea (disposable cup): ₹5
- Tea with tea bag: ₹10
- Instant coffee (150 ml disposable cup): ₹10
- Rail Neer or approved 1-litre water bottle: ₹14
- Rail Neer or approved 500 ml water bottle: ₹9
Understanding the Price Revisions
These price points are part of a broader effort by the Railway Board to pass on the benefits of tax relief resulting from GST reforms directly to the passengers. These revised rates officially came into effect on September 22, 2025. Notably, the cost of a 1-litre bottle of water was reduced from ₹15 to ₹14, while the 500 ml bottle saw a reduction from ₹10 to ₹9, ensuring a more pocket-friendly experience for daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
How to Protect Yourself from Overcharging
To ensure you are paying the correct amount, Indian Railways strongly advises all passengers to insist on a digital or printed bill for every catering purchase. If a vendor refuses to provide a receipt or demands an amount higher than the fixed rates, passengers have the right to verify the charges by requesting the official menu card, which is mandatorily available with the pantry car manager on every train.
If you encounter instances of overcharging, do not hesitate to raise a concern. You can report these incidents by calling the toll-free helpline number 1800111139. Proactive reporting helps the authorities take swift action against unauthorized pricing and improves the overall quality of service for everyone on board. Always remember that transparency is your right as a passenger, and IRCTC is committed to making your journey as seamless as possible.
