The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Mathura-Nagda 3rd and 4th line project on May 5, 2026. This mega project covers a distance of 568 kilometers and aims to improve rail connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan to make logistics more efficient.

The project focuses on expanding the existing double track into a multi-track network to reduce congestion. It will connect Nagda in Madhya Pradesh to Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, passing through Kota and Bharatpur. The government has set a completion target for this project by 2030-31.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the new lines will increase capacity and improve service reliability. The project will make it easier for tourists to reach places like Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Kuno National Park, and Mathura-Vrindavan. For goods transport, it will help in moving coal, food grains, and cement more smoothly.

The government expects the project to handle an additional 60 million tons of freight annually. This expansion will also lead to a decrease in oil imports by about 37 crore litres and lower carbon emissions by 185 crore kilograms.
