The Murkongselek-Pasighat new rail line project reached a major milestone as the first 15.6 km stretch from Murkongselek in Assam to Sille in Arunachal Pradesh was officially commissioned. Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Sumeet Singhal completed a detailed two-day statutory inspection on February 12 and 13, 2026. This new broad-gauge link directly connects Assam’s Dhemaji district with Arunachal’s East Siang district, marking a new era for regional transport.

What are the key details of the Murkongselek-Pasighat rail project?

The project is divided into two distinct phases to ensure steady progress. Phase I, covering the 15.60 km distance between Murkongselek and Sille, is now fully commissioned after successful speed trials and safety checks. Phase II, which will connect Sille to Pasighat over 10.55 km, is currently under construction and is targeted for completion by the middle of 2026. The Sille Railway Station has been built as a B-Class facility and is the first of three new stations to become operational under this project.

How will the new rail connectivity impact the public and economy?

This railway project is designed to bring significant changes to the local economy and strategic movement. It serves as a vital link for the rapid mobilization of resources toward remote border areas. For the common man, it reduces the cost of transporting essential commodities and provides a cheaper alternative to road transport. The rail line also makes it easier for tourists to reach Pasighat and other scenic destinations across Arunachal Pradesh, which is expected to boost the local hospitality sector.

Project Infrastructure and Financial Data

Particulars Details
Total Project Cost ₹1,252.49 Crore
Phase I Length (Commissioned) 15.60 km
Phase II Length (Under Construction) 10.55 km
Major Bridges 18
Minor Bridges 35
New Stations Sille, Labo, and Pasighat

While the infrastructure and the Sille station are ready, regular passenger services will start once the final authorization for rolling stock is received. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is overseeing the execution, ensuring that all 18 major and 35 minor bridges meet the required safety standards for heavy rail traffic.
