The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is introducing electric mobility scooters to improve security and surveillance at railway stations. This move comes after a successful trial at Dr. M.G.R. Chennai Central Railway Station. The initiative aims to make patrolling faster and more efficient, especially in crowded areas.
What are the features of these RPF e-scooters?
The RPF is using three-wheeler mobility scooters known as TRIKE vehicles. These scooters are designed for short-distance patrolling on platforms and in concourse areas. They are equipped with several tools to help security personnel during their duty.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Max Speed | 15 to 30 kmph |
| Range | Up to 35 km per charge |
| Equipment | Sirens, PA systems, GPS tracking |
| Ignition | RFID-based system |
How will this benefit the passengers?
Southern Railway’s Principal Chief Security Commissioner and RPF IG K Arul Jyothi stated that these scooters will help in better crowd management. Since the officers can move quickly, the response time for incidents like theft or snatching will decrease. This allows the RPF to catch culprits faster and provide immediate help to passengers in emergencies.
Where will these e-scooters be deployed?
After the successful pilot at Chennai Central, Southern Railway has already bought 10 more e-scooters. The plan is to expand this to other stations in the Chennai Division, including Chennai Egmore, Tambaram, and Katpadi. Eventually, the Ministry of Railways will implement this system at other major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai.
