The Southern Railway is launching a new Vande Bharat Express train between Chennai and Rameswaram after completing electrification of the railway section.
Southern Railway has an exciting update for train travelers. They are set to introduce a Vande Bharat Express service between Chennai and Rameswaram now that the electrification of the 53-km Ramanathapuram-Rameswaram route is complete.
The Railway Board has received a proposal to start this new daytime train service from either Chennai Egmore or Tambaram. Currently, there are no daytime trains operating on this route, which stretches around 600 to 660 km, and this new service aims to reduce the crowding on the existing overnight trains.
This new Vande Bharat Express will help passengers make quicker trips. The train should ideally reach Rameswaram in under eight hours, allowing for same-day return trips. The exact route is still being planned, keeping in mind passenger demand and travel time.
With this electrification, the Rameswaram-Okha Express was the first train to run on this section using electric locomotives. It’s important to note that Vande Bharat trains can only operate on fully electrified routes.
Next, the Railway officials will carry out necessary trials to ensure everything is safe before launching the new service. This is a significant step for improving train travel in the region.
