Indian Railways is making significant strides in modernizing its vast network, with a strong focus on capital expenditure and advanced safety protocols. As of July 2026, the national transporter has successfully utilized Rs 1,14,973 crore, accounting for nearly 39% of its total budget of Rs 2,93,030 crore for the 2026-27 financial year. These investments are aimed at boosting operational efficiency and modernizing the backbone of India’s transport sector.
- Record Safety Spend: Allocations for safety have surged to Rs 1,20,389 crore in 2026-27, up from Rs 39,200 crore in 2013-14.
- Kavach Expansion: Version 4.0 is now active on 2,633 route kilometers, including the busy Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors.
- Enhanced Speeds: Over 81% of the rail network now supports train speeds of 110 kmph or higher.

Prioritizing Safety with Kavach 4.0
The safety of passengers remains the top priority for Indian Railways. A cornerstone of this initiative is the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection system. With Rs 3,875 crore spent on Kavach works up to June 2026 and a fresh allocation of Rs 2,066 crore for the current fiscal year, the rollout is gathering momentum. Currently, trackside implementation is actively underway across 21,794 route kilometers, ensuring that the network becomes increasingly resilient against operational risks.
Infrastructure Growth and Speed Upgrades
The pace of railway development has doubled compared to a decade ago. Between 2014 and 2026, the Railways commissioned 36,429 km of new lines. Furthermore, the network has seen a massive improvement in speed capabilities; the proportion of tracks capable of supporting speeds of 130 kmph and above has risen to 22.5%, a significant jump from 6.3% in 2014. Currently, there are 514 sanctioned infrastructure projects in progress, covering approximately 40,000 km with an estimated cost of Rs 8.31 lakh crore.
Digital Transformation at Stations
Technology is playing a pivotal role in passenger experience and security. To modernize station monitoring, the Railways has awarded a Rs 12.13 crore contract to Provigil Surveillance. This project will integrate AI-enabled analytics and facial recognition into existing CCTV networks, providing a robust digital layer of security for millions of passengers who traverse the Indian Railways network daily.
