The Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway (SER) has launched a significant infrastructure project to upgrade Tatanagar Railway Station. By extending Platforms 4 and 5, the station will gain the capacity to accommodate longer trains of up to 24 coaches, addressing a critical need for efficient passenger and freight management. This initiative is part of the broader, ambitious redevelopment of the station under the national Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

- E-tenders for the extension of Platforms 4 and 5 were floated on August 6, 2026, with the opening scheduled for August 26, 2026.
- The project includes the construction of a dedicated parcel platform at the Kharagpur end of the station.
- The awarded agency must complete all construction work within a strict six-month timeline.
- The project is part of a ₹283-crore redevelopment blueprint initiated in February 2024, with a completion deadline set for March 2029.
Focus on Quality and Future Infrastructure
To ensure long-term durability, the railway authorities have mandated rigorous quality control measures. The successful bidder is required to conduct material testing at accredited laboratories and establish an on-site quality control lab. Furthermore, the contract includes a clause requiring the agency to maintain the newly developed infrastructure for six months after the project’s completion.
This development follows persistent efforts by local representatives to modernize the station’s facilities. Member of Parliament Bidyut Baran Mahato has been instrumental in advocating for these upgrades, having met with the Railway Board’s Executive Director (Public Grievances), Vikas Jain, in April 2026 to expedite the process.
Transforming Passenger Experience
Beyond platform extensions, the Tatanagar redevelopment plan is set to significantly improve the station’s layout and functionality. Future phases of the project include the construction of a three-storey multi-level parking facility and a specialized “Passenger Holding Area.” These additions are designed to streamline passenger movement and reduce congestion at this high-traffic junction, ensuring a more comfortable travel experience for commuters. As work progresses, these upgrades will position Tatanagar as a modern, high-capacity hub capable of meeting the growing demands of Indian Railways’ expanding network.
