Indian Railways achieves near total electrification of its broad gauge network

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced during his 80th Independence Day address that the Indian Railways has reached a historic milestone by achieving 99.6% electrification of its broad-gauge network. This massive infrastructure push marks a significant shift in how the nation moves, transforming a network that saw slow progress for decades into a modern, electric-powered system.

Key highlights of this achievement include:

  • The national rail network has reached 99.6% electrification as of mid-2026.
  • The last decade accounted for 70% of the total electrification progress, compared to only 30% in the preceding 90 years.
  • Diesel consumption has dropped by 185 crore litres between 2015-16 and 2024-25.
  • Rail transport now emits 89% less carbon dioxide per tonne-kilometre than road transport.

A Decade of Rapid Transformation

While the electrification of Indian Railways dates back to 1925, the pace of modernization was historically gradual. For the first nine decades, only 30% of the network was electrified. However, the last ten years have witnessed an aggressive acceleration, with nearly 70% of the entire network being converted to electric traction. This rapid transition is not just a technical achievement but a major strategic move to reduce the country’s dependence on imported diesel, directly impacting the nation’s energy security.

Environmental and Future Impact

Beyond the savings in fuel costs, the shift to electric traction is a cornerstone of India’s environmental strategy. By moving freight and passengers onto electrified tracks, the railways are playing a pivotal role in reducing the national carbon footprint. Statistics indicate that rail transport is significantly cleaner, producing approximately 89% less carbon dioxide per tonne-kilometre compared to road transport.

Looking ahead, the government is not stopping at electrification. The focus remains on cutting-edge innovation, including the recent launch of India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train and the ongoing, high-speed development of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. These milestones reflect a broader commitment to building a world-class railway infrastructure that is both sustainable and technologically advanced as India works toward its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
