Stray Dog Bites Become Major Health Crisis in Bihar, 776 Cases Reported Daily, Reveals Economic Survey 2025-26

Stray dog bites have become a major concern in Bihar, surpassing diseases like cancer and tuberculosis. The latest economic survey presented in the assembly has revealed a worrying trend where the menace of stray dogs has escalated to a serious health crisis.

The economic survey data shows a significant rise in dog bite cases from 2,44,367 in 2023-24 to 2,83,274 in the following year. This indicates a rapid increase of almost 39,000 cases in just one year, highlighting the severity of the issue not only in urban areas but also in rural regions.

Patna leads in the number of dog bite cases with 29,280 people affected, followed by districts like East Champaran, Nalanda, and Gopalganj. On the other hand, Aurangabad reported only 467 cases, the lowest in the state, showcasing the impact of local administration, population density, and stray dog numbers on the incidents.

The report does not specifically mention rabies cases, even though globally, rabies causes nearly 59,000 deaths annually, with most cases linked to dog bites. Rabies is a fatal disease with no cure once symptoms appear, emphasizing the importance of timely vaccination as the only prevention method.

The survey also revealed that snake bites resulted in the deaths of 138 individuals in Bihar during 2024-25, indicating that animal-related risks are not just fears but directly affecting lives. The escalating number of stray dog bites in Bihar has become a significant public health crisis, raising questions about the need for solid policies on stray dog control and vaccination to prevent the daily count of 776 people being bitten from increasing further.
