Trial Run Launch of the RRTS Corridor
Taking a significant step towards establishing India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) commenced trial runs between the Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar sections of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. The trial run of the Namo Bharat train marks a crucial milestone as it officially connects the Delhi segment of the corridor with the previously operational Sahibabad-Meerut South section. NCRTC Managing Director Shalabh Goyal, along with other senior officials, oversaw the event where the train was operated manually to evaluate the compatibility of the civil structures along the route.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Enhancements
The Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar section spans approximately 12 kilometers and includes two RRTS stations: Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar. Once operational, passengers will benefit from a fast and uninterrupted service, allowing travel from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South in under 40 minutes. Anand Vihar RRTS station is poised to become a major transit hub, connecting with two metro lines (Blue and Pink), Anand Vihar railway station, and two inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs). To enhance connectivity, NCRTC is working on seamless integration of the Anand Vihar station with various transport modes, making it a model for multi-modal integration.
Future Developments and Expansion Plans
The New Ashok Nagar RRTS station is strategically located less than 100 meters from the New Ashok Nagar Metro Station, with plans for a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) to facilitate easy access between the two transport modes. Additionally, two more FOBs are under construction to improve access for local residents. Currently, Namo Bharat trains operate over a 42 km stretch from Sahibabad to Meerut South, including nine stations. The addition of the New Ashok Nagar segment will extend the RRTS operated length to 54 kilometers, housing 11 stations. The complete 82 km corridor is expected to be operational by June 2025, enabling travel between Delhi and Meerut in less than one hour.
