A major fire broke out in a special departmental coach stationed at Jabalpur Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh on the morning of Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The incident, which took place between 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM, caused significant damage to the railway property, though officials have confirmed that no passengers were involved and no injuries occurred.

  • The fire occurred in a departmental coach parked at platform number 6 near a siding.
  • The coach was empty at the time of the incident, resulting in zero casualties.
  • Railway authorities suspect a short circuit as the primary cause of the blaze.
  • A high-level inquiry has been ordered by the Divisional Railway Manager to investigate the incident.

Details of the Incident

The affected bogie, identified as a special departmental coach—variously described as a Divisional Railway Manager’s or General Manager’s coach—was unoccupied and not in service for general passengers. The fire caused extensive damage, completely destroying the interior, furniture, and other valuable items inside the carriage. Railway officials estimate the financial loss to be in the lakhs of rupees.

Upon receiving the alert, emergency response teams and firefighters were promptly deployed to the site. With the dedicated assistance of railway staff, the fire was successfully brought under control within approximately an hour. Fire Deputy Superintendent Rajendra Patel confirmed that the flames were fully extinguished, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby tracks or other rolling stock.

Investigation Underway

Following the incident, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Kamal Kumar Talreja took immediate cognizance of the matter. A high-level committee comprising senior officials has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation. The inquiry aims to pinpoint the exact cause of the short circuit and analyze why smoke was seen emanating from the closed, empty coach. This investigation is expected to provide clarity on the safety protocols surrounding parked departmental stock and prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
