This major infrastructure project aims to slash travel time between the two financial hubs to approximately two hours. Tunneling work is a critical component of this project; notably, Mountain Tunnel 5 (MT5) was successfully broken through in January 2026. Officials expect further breakthroughs for Mountain Tunnels 3 and 4 by late 2026.
In Maharashtra, significant progress is visible as pier work between Nalasopara and Virar station is already complete, with construction teams now focusing on roof and platform structures. Meanwhile, work continues at major station sites in Vadodara and Bharuch.
Strategic Initiatives and Leadership
The project is receiving high-level oversight to ensure it meets its timeline. The 10th report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways, tabled on August 10, 2026, stressed the importance of accelerating indigenization and ensuring all statutory clearances are secured early to avoid project delays. To support these goals, NHSRCL signed a contract on August 8, 2026, with the KCS-AVADH Consortium for specialized rolling stock maintenance machinery.
Administrative changes are also underway, with Alok Katiyar expected to take on the additional charge as Director (Works) at NHSRCL starting September 1, 2026. These developments signal a concerted effort to transform India’s rail infrastructure through high-speed connectivity and self-reliance.
