Despite an investment of Rs 6 crore, the Nishatpura Railway Station in Bhopal remains non-operational for passenger services, more than three years after its construction was completed in June 2023. Designed to provide better connectivity for an estimated 300,000 local residents, the station currently stands deserted, leading to growing frustration among the public who expected the facility to be functional long ago.
Key highlights regarding the status of the station:
- The station was completed in June 2023 at a cost of approximately Rs 6 crore.
- It was intended to serve 300,000 local residents and reduce congestion at Bhopal Junction.
- Operations are currently stalled due to a lack of political approval for train stoppages.
- A proposal for 14 trains to halt at the station is currently awaiting final clearance.
- The site is located near a new Rs 150 crore Vande Bharat maintenance and training hub.
The Reason Behind the Delay
While railway officials have maintained that all technical preparations are complete, the station continues to remain shut. Bhopal division PRO Nawal Agarwal has repeatedly assured that the facility will open soon; however, the reality on the ground remains unchanged. Reports indicate that routine procedures, such as final safety inspections, staff postings, and operational directives, have been caught in a bureaucratic cycle, leaving the station in a state of eerie silence that locals have begun to describe as a “haunted” landmark.
Strategic Importance of Nishatpura
Beyond passenger convenience, the station was designed to play a vital role in optimizing train operations. Currently, trains arriving from the Indore and Western Railway routes often require 30 to 40 minutes for locomotive reversals, which occupies platforms at the main Bhopal Junction. By operationalizing Nishatpura, the railways intend to streamline these movements and alleviate significant congestion.
Interestingly, the dormancy of the passenger station contrasts sharply with other infrastructure developments in the area. The Nishatpura locality is also home to a massive Rs 150 crore Vande Bharat maintenance and training hub, showcasing that while high-end railway infrastructure is progressing, the basic passenger utility of the station remains sidelined. As of July 2026, commuters are still waiting for higher authorities to issue the necessary directives to finally open the station gates.
