Indian Railways has achieved a major safety milestone on the high-density Delhi-Mumbai corridor. The Kavach 4.0 system is now operational across 559.5 kilometers of track under the Western Railway jurisdiction. This indigenously developed technology significantly reduces the risk of train collisions and overspeeding on one of the busiest rail routes in the country.

Which sections are now covered under Kavach 4.0?

The implementation has focused on the Western Railway portion of the Mumbai to New Delhi main line. Recent progress shows that a significant part of the corridor is now protected by this advanced safety system.

  • Vadodara to Nagda section: 224.51 kilometers commissioned on March 30, 2026
  • Vadodara to Virar section: 344 kilometers commissioned earlier in January 2026
  • Tuglakabad Junction Cabin to Palwal: 35 kilometers on the Northern Railway section
  • Total progress: 559.5 kilometers out of the 693 kilometers target for Western Railway is now complete

How does the Kavach system improve passenger safety?

Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection system that meets the global Safety Integrity Level 4 standards. It assists loco pilots by monitoring train movements and taking control when necessary to prevent accidents. The system is designed to work effectively even in low visibility conditions like heavy rain or fog.

Safety Feature Operational Benefit
Automatic Braking Prevents trains from passing signals at danger
Collision Avoidance Stops two trains if they are on the same track
Speed Control Automatically manages speed on curves and diversions
Locomotive Support Now operational in WAP-7, WAG-9, and WAP-5 engines

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that over 1,452 route kilometers have been covered across both the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. General Manager of Western Railway Shri Pradeep Kumar also noted that the remaining sections are being completed at a fast pace to ensure end-to-end safety.
