Indian Railways has hit a historic landmark in its modernization journey by electrifying **99.6% of its broad gauge network**. This achievement places India as the second most electrified major railway system in the world, ranking just behind Switzerland, which currently holds the top spot with 100% electrification. The milestone was confirmed by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in a formal written reply to the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2026.

Key highlights of the electrification progress include:

  • 48,072 route kilometers were electrified between 2014 and 2026, significantly outpacing the 21,801 kilometers achieved in the six decades prior to 2014.
  • Diesel consumption for rail operations dropped from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, resulting in a total saving of 185 crore litres.
  • The shift to electric traction has significantly lowered carbon emissions, as rail transport now emits 89% less carbon dioxide per tonne-kilometre compared to road transport.
  • Indian Railways has successfully commissioned over 1,260 MW of solar and wind power capacity as of June 2026.

A Rapid Transformation of Infrastructure

This progress is based on data provided by the International Union of Railways (UIC) in June 2025. The rapid pace of electrification highlights a massive shift in how the national transporter manages its energy requirements and infrastructure maintenance. By moving away from fossil fuels, the Railways has not only achieved substantial foreign exchange savings but has also positioned itself as a leader in sustainable transportation.

Future-Ready Rail Network

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Railways has institutionalized this green transition. All new railway line projects and multi-tracking initiatives are now designed to integrate electrification infrastructure from the very beginning. This ensures that the network remains efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly as it continues to expand to meet the growing demands of the country. With nearly the entire broad gauge network powered by electricity, passengers can look forward to a cleaner, faster, and more reliable rail experience across the length and breadth of India.
