Indian Railways is taking a major step toward enhancing passenger comfort by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its laundry operations. On July 24, 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that the national transporter has launched pilot projects to use AI-based stain detection technology. This initiative is designed to ensure that the linen provided to AC class passengers meets the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
Key highlights of the new linen quality initiative include:
• AI-based stain detection systems are currently being piloted in the Pune Division of Central Railway, as well as the Jaipur and Jodhpur divisions of North Western Railway.
• The standard AC bedroll kit continues to include two bedsheets, one pillow cover, and a hand towel, with blanket covers washed after every single journey.
• Railways already uses “Whito-Meters” and CCTV surveillance to monitor cleaning effectiveness across all mechanized laundry facilities.
• Blanket covers are being specifically prioritized for North Western Railway trains and the new Kamakhya-Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper service.
Modernizing Laundry Operations
Beyond the AI pilot, Indian Railways maintains a rigorous quality control framework. The existing infrastructure includes the use of **Whito-Meters in all mechanized laundries** to scientifically measure the effectiveness of washing cycles. Additionally, **CCTV cameras are deployed to ensure continuous monitoring** of operational standards, ensuring that the process remains transparent and consistent.
Enhancing Passenger Comfort
Passenger feedback remains a core focus for the Railway Ministry. The recent introduction of blanket covers on services like the **Kamakhya-Howrah Vande Bharat Sleeper train** has been met with positive responses from travelers. To maintain these high standards, the railway authorities regularly review the **”codal life”**—the prescribed service life—of all linen items. Any items identified as unserviceable during these audits are immediately replaced according to established guidelines.
By embracing modern technology like AI, Indian Railways aims to eliminate human error in quality checks and provide a more hygienic and comfortable journey for millions of AC class passengers. These efforts reflect a broader commitment to modernizing the passenger experience across the entire rail network.
