Indian Railways is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) technology to protect elephants from train accidents. This new system is called ‘Gajraj Suraksha’. It helps in detecting the presence of elephants on the tracks and alerts the train drivers in time.
What is Gajraj Suraksha and how does it work?
The system uses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology. It can detect the vibrations caused by elephants moving near the tracks. Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that the system now detects elephants with 99.5% accuracy. This allows loco pilots to slow down or stop the train before a collision happens.
Where is this system being installed and at what cost?
The project started as a pilot in 11 elephant corridors of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in December 2022. The government has approved the installation of this Intrusion Detection System (IDS) across 1,158 km of railway corridors at a cost of ₹208 crore. The plan includes covering major corridors in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
